Derwood was a part of a patrol of Galbatorix's men sent to roam the land in search of a fugitive. Meanwhile Eragon passed through the same area but to avoid detection used an invisibility spell. After finding nothing when looking for Eragon, for he was invisible, the men began to argue about who they were searching for when this soldier suggested it was Murtagh.
