Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg (1 March 1868 - 28 June 1914) was the wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Theirs was a morganatic marriage, meaning that their children were ineligible for succession to the throne, thus the next in succession was Franz Ferndinand's nephew Archduke Charles. On 28 June 1914, she and her husband were shot to death by terrorist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo, an act which helped touch off World War I.
