A non-commissioned officer (abbreviated noncom in naval terminology, or NCO in infantry parlance) is a member of a military organization who has not achieved an officer rank but is still considered senior to lower enlisted ranks. In naval ranking systems, petty officers of all grades are noncoms. In infantry-based ranking systems, sergeants of all grades are NCOs.
