Carbon-based life is the amalgamation of living beings that use carbon-containing molecules for structural, energetic or genetic storage purposes; which is the totality of all life in the universe known so far. Though life based on elements other than carbon might be featured in science fiction or fantasy, extraterrestrial life possessing a similar biochemistry to Earth life is still a trope in both genres.
