Steve Gerber (1947-2008) was an American comic book writer best known as the creator of Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck. Famous for his runs on Man-Thing, The Defenders, Daredevil and many others, Geber was known for bucking trends with his skill for weaving social satire and absurdist comedy into traditional comic book adventures—in one famous instance, his failure to meet a deadline on an issue of Howard led him to substitute the story with an illustrated prose piece detailing conversation between himself and the title character. His confrontational creative style and unusual brand of humour branded him as a wild card in the industry, a reputation that was punctuated by his possessiveness of his characters and in particular, a legal battle with Marvel Comics for ownership of Howa
