Hexcalibur was originally a Honedge that Emerald caught at Route 6 in the Kalos region. During their battle, Honedge respected Emerald's tactics and his Pokemon's battling strength; thus letting himself get caught and traveled with Emerald and co. on their journey. Hexcalibur acts as a (ironically) sword and shield. He's trained to be able to switch in his Shield and Blade Forme extremely quickly with his Stance Change ability.
