The big coal seam that is being worked with long-wall mining in the area now is in Washington County. The threat to Pittsburgh with long-wall mining is the rivers. The rivers could turn brown and fill with crud from the effects of these efforts. Entire streams have gone away. Acid drainage appears elsewhere. As Pittsburgh tries to turn the the rivers with new developments, we might loose our rivers in terms of being a good neighbor with nature.
