Protein C is a blood protein that is involved in clotting, inflammation and cell death. In its normal state, it is inactive, but carries out its function when it is activated by combination with thrombin. Once developed as a pharmaceutical to treat severe sepsis, its use was discontinued when clinical evidence showed that it did not improve survival rates but did increase the risk of excessive bleeding.
