Skins are nylon rugs with directional fibres one attaches to the bottom of a splitboard half while climbing. The directional fibres allow the skin to slide freely in only one direction, so splitboarders use them to climb up easily without sliding back. Skins are called skins because when they were invented actual animal skins were used.
