  • Johnny Steele (December 20, 1934 - ) is a former NASCAR driver from Carmichael, CA. He competed in eleven Sprint Cup Series events in his career. Steele's debut came in 1965, when he competed at his local track of Riverside. Starting 26th in his own equipment, Steele lasted just sixteen laps before a disappointing engine issue left him 37th. Steele stepped it up to a two-race schedule in the 1966 season, opting to start the year off back at Riverside. This time, Steele fared significantly better. Starting 23rd in the field, Steele completed all but twenty-one laps in the race to drive to a career-best 13th place finish. Following that mini-success, Steele tried his hand at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, he struggled to 25th following a blown engine. Steele stepped it up another notch for the 1967 season, leaving the comforts of the West Coast for some of the East Coast events. Unfortunately, Steele's efforts were cut short in each and every one of his five starts that due to engine issues. They bit him hard at Riverside, leaving him 40th to start the year. But despite the other engine issues in the races, Steele still garnered some pretty respectable results. He showed 15th at Richmond and 18th at Hillsboro to highlight his year. Following that disappointing season, Steele stepped it back to just one race in 1968, competing in the confines of Riverside. This time, a crash would wind up derailing his efforts, leaving his tangled car to finish 31st. Steele's next start, also at Riverside in 1969, did not go much better. He only lasted three laps before reporting an oil leak, and issue that ultimately took him out of the race and left him in 42nd. Steele's final race came in 1971, when he made the transition to Ontario. Starting 48th in the large field, Steele only lasted seventy-nine laps before yet another engine issue left him in 37th.
