After its release in Japan, the anime was licensed for a DVD release by Geneon Entertainment USA, with a subsequent broadcast on Fuse TV. The show was also distributed to Australian, British and Canadian anime markets. Since its release, Ergo Proxy has received mostly favorable reviews which praised its visuals and themes.

Sprawę bada inspektor Re-l Mayer, czarnowłosa dziewczyna w niebieskim makijażu i jej osobisty asystent, android Iggi. Re-l natrafia na ślad tajemniczej istoty zwanej Proxy, która prawdopodobnie jest źródłem wirusa. A co z tym wszystkim ma wspólnego Vincent Law, imigrant starający się o obywatelstwo Romdo? „Ergo Proxy” wyrasta z dwóch dominujących w fantastycznym anime tradycji. Z cyberpunka, czyli wizji mrocznej, nasyconej technologią przyszłości, którą ćwierć wieku temu Ridley Scott dostrzegł w nocnych neonach Tokio i utrwalił w futurystycznej wizji „Blade Runnera”, i z fantastyki ekologicznej, zwłaszcza z anime „Nausicaa z Doliny Wiatru” Hayao Miyazakiego. Ta pierwsza stawia bohaterów przed wyzwaniami cybernetycznego świata, ta druga sięga dalej, pytając o przyszłość ludzkości jako ginącego gatunku na nieprzyjaznej planecie. Tak więc ”Ergo Proxy” toczy się zgodnie z regułami klasycznego s.f., śledztwo dotyczące zarażonych wirusem świadomości androidów i krwawych morderstw zamienia się w odkrywanie o wiele większej tajemnicy – zagadki świata. By poznać prawdę, bohaterowie muszą zakwestionować jego porządek, zrozumieć nie tylko kto i dlaczego, ale przede wszystkim jak. Postmodernistyczne „Ergo Proxy” usatysfakcjonuje wielbicieli „Matrixa”. Tak jak dzieło braci Wachowskich (choć znacznie mniej chaotycznie!) naszpikowane jest erudycyjnymi nawiązaniami (np. androidy Donova Mayera, władającego Romdo dziadka Re-l, nazywają się jak filozofowie - Berkeley, Derrida, Husserl i Lacan). Nie brak tu też widowiskowych scen akcji wspartych wspaniałymi efektami, jakie daje połączenie animacji klasycznej i komputerowej. Grzechem byłoby nie wspomnieć też o olśniewającej wizualnej stronie serialu - śledząc poczynania pani inspektor widz zanurza się w duszny nastrój miasta, potęgowany przez szare i zimne kolory otoczenia. Depresyjny klimat serialu podkreśla piosenka „Paranoid Android” brytyjskiego zespołu Radiohead, użyta w napisach końcowych.
