  • The Finer family were a clan of silversmiths in Port Caynn in the third century of the Human Era. The head of the family was Isanz Finer until his death in late September of 247 HE. The Finers maintained three forges and a good-sized shop in Tradesmen's District. Isanz had many children and even grand- and great-grandchildren. The younger family members were apprenticed out to silversmiths all over Port Caynn, following the family tradition. Meraud Finer, Isanz's great-granddaughter was supposed to take his share of the family's business one day and probably did so after his death.

The family had a long tradition on silversmithing and they had given their secrets on through the generations, keeping the knowledge in their family. One of their secrets was how to determine the origin of silver. The Finers were rich and powerful enough to have protective spells on Isanz Finer's house and guards strong enough even to defy Pearl Skinner. The Finers were old friends of Clara Goodwin's from the time when she was working in Port Caynn for some months. Goodwin and Rebakah Cooper came to them asking for help in finding out where the silver for the false coins came from. They had already realized that the money had gone bad by the false coins they had gotten. They reported them to the Provost's Guard and to the Silversmith's Guild but didn't get any response from either. When the prices began to rise more and more, the Finers stockpiled food and other stores and brought their children out of the city. Nearly all family members remaining in the city were arrested shortly afterwards on the false charges of turning out and passing along false coins. The charges were nailed on the doors of every business and house they owned. Meraud then came to Beka for help. The Finers were first brought to Tradesmen's kennel, but didn't stay there long as they were sent to Rattery Prison soon after. After Lord Gershom and his Dogs arrived from Corus, the Finers were released. As a compensation they were allowed to appoint the new officials of the Silversmith's Guild.
