| abstract | - John James "Drummer" Drummond was a guardsman with the 237th Transportation Company of the California National Guard. Other men in this unit included Francis Dowler, Carl Cosgrove Jr., Reggie Banks, and Chris Henderson. Drummond grew up in the Graceada Park neighborhood of Modesto, and joined the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department in 1990. His Guard squad was deployed to Saudia Arabia during the Gulf War. One of the Company's duties was to transport and destroy weapons confiscated from Iraqi soldiers. He and other members of the Company stole several handguns to take home as souvenirs. He also spent time aboard the Saudi Princess in the Persian Gulf in March of 1991. During that time he discovered that four members of his unit drugged and gang raped a Danish reporter named Anneke Jesperson, and he assisted in covering up their crime so that they would be indebted to him. His squad was later deployed to Los Angeles during the riots of 1992. During the riots he used a handgun he smuggled back from the Gulf War to kill Jesperson who was there looking for them. He then faked an injury so he could go to Jesperson's hotel room to search for evidence. He took her journal, which he had translated into English, contained very incriminating evidence. After returning home he used the murder as more leverage against the others to further his own career. It is also believed that he killed Henderson in 1998 when he became a risk. He eventually won election to the office of Sheriff in 2006. He was reelected in 2010 before running for Congress in 2013. His largest financial supporter of his campaign was Carl Cosgrove, Jr. and Cosgrove Agriculture. After LAPD detective Harry Bosch came around looking to solve the murder he killed the remaining soldiers, captured Bosch, and attempted to frame him for the crime. His plans failed when Bosch escaped. Drummond then tried to escape by helicopter but hit a wind turbine and crashed. He was severely injured and paralyzed from the neck down. He was arrested for the murders of Jesperson and the other men. A search of his property revealed Jesperson's journal and other evidence.
