He graduated from Oberlin College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion, and received a M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in 1993. He served as the pastor of two small churches in southeastern Ohio from 1994 to 1996. After leaving ministry, he lived in Wisconsin and California before moving to Washington in 2000 to take a job at Wizards of the Coast.
