Starting positions in the twenty-two car field are unknown, but Mays stayed out of trouble and was rewarded with a solid 11th place showing. Mays did not fare so well when he returned to action in 1952, racing at North Wilkesboro. Starting positions in that field are unknown, but Mays finished last (24th) after a first lap crash. Things were even worse at Atlanta, where Mays had trouble and couldn't even start the race. He was given credit for last place (24th) but it does not even officially count as a start.
