| abstract | - SS Mormachawk was a cargo vessel and troop ship of the United States during the Second World War. She was built in 1942 by Consolidated Steel Corp., in Wilmington, California and grossed 6,750 tons. She was a standard ship type C1-B and was completed as a troop transport ship and assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet. During World War II the SS Mormachawk or the "Hawk" as she was called by her crew and passengers, hauled troops, supplies and equipment to many South Sea ports as well as to Alaska. On February 27, 1943 Mormachawk carried the United States Naval 44th Construction Battalion or the "44th Seabees" on their first mission to Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides. They arrived on March 18, crossing the equator on March 7. In 1946 the Mormachawk was returned to United States Maritime Commission and also served during the Vietnam War until she was removed from service. In March 1964 the SS Mormachawk was scrapped in Portland, Oregon.
