It is a common encounter on the Underground Railroad, a rare encounter on overland railroads and also found in certain sections of the Metropolis, where it can be encountered as early as the Worker's City Station, if the player jumps on the railway tracks. Signals are not a threat in themselves, as neither of their abilities deals damage. "Stop!" and "Warning! Warning!" simply display text. The two messages are used alternatingly. Signal's major success was learning that Leia Organa had acquired the Death Star plans by analysing the unshielded Extremely Low Energy Level transmissions from the Tantive IV. One of Signal's other duties was to decode hyperspace transmissions intercepted by Imperial ships.

  • The term signal denotes a time-varying quantity that represents a medium level of information. A signal serves as a carrier of a message; It is itself carried by signs. Signals are usually categorized in discrete and continuous spaces that the functions are defined over. This distinction applies to the corresponding time domains (e.g. discrete and continuous time domains). A second important distinction is between discrete-valued (digital) and continuous-valued signals. In organisms, discrete-valued signals are to be found in genetically encoded information and - with regard to a single event - the all-or-none law of neuronal firing. Examples for continuous-valued signals are the firing rates of neurons and the levels of hormones, enzymes or intracellular transmitters. In 2004, Brunner at al. showed that the velocity of signal transfer cannot exceed the speed of light in vacuum (299 792,5 km/s).

They can also slightly prolong battles, as they have to be destroyed together with all other enemies before the battle ends. Like other turrets, Signals have the ability to raise and lower, but start battle raised. When lowered, they become immune to direct damage and receive a HP bonus. They can be destroyed by launching an explosive device into the shaft from which they deploy. They have insufficient defense to survive grenades, which easily dispatch them. If the player fails to obtain a Train Ticket before attempting to enter the railroad, there is a scripted fight against two Signals, which will incapacitate the player and dump him or her outside the tunnel entrance.
