  • The 1964 Motor Trend 500 was a Grand National (now Sprint Cup) - Pacific Coast Late Model Series (now Camping World West Series) combination event held at Riverside International Raceway on January 19, 1964. Dan Gurney held off teammate Marvin Panch for his only win of the year. Eventual GN season champion Richard Petty finished 26th but eventual PCLMS champ Ron Hornaday, Sr. didn't even compete in the race. The race, though, was marred by tragedy. Two-time defending GN champ Joe Weatherly died after losing control early in the race and slamming into the turn six guardrail. Weatherly's death brought about the use of window nets. Stats
