  • Franziska von Karma is the second daughter of Manfred von Karma and is currently stationed aboard her father's ship. She thinks she ought to be first mate and whips people who look at her wrong. __TOC__
  • She is known to carry a whip with her at all times, which she often uses on almost everybody she meets. Although she has a formal tone, to the point of addressing everyone by their full names, von Karma very often uses the word "fool" (e.g. "A foolish fool is only foolish enough to foolishly suggest such a foolishly foolish theory").

  • Franziska von Karma is the daughter of the late veteran prosecutor Manfred von Karma and a formidable prosecuting attorney in her own right. She was the prosecutor for most of Phoenix Wright's cases from June 2017 until March 2018, as well as an acting prosecutor for the trial of Iris of Hazakura Temple. She also aided Interpol in their investigation into an international smuggling ring, as well as another investigation into a black market auction. She enjoys using the terms "fool" and "foolish" (and variations thereof) to describe people who are, in her opinion, inferior. She is also known to carry a whip (a riding crop when she was younger) with her at all times, which she will often use on almost everybody she meets with very little provocation.

  • "Lolz oh noes Funky lieks Franzy more than Godoh WE MUST KILLS HIM" Franziska von Karma. Hm. I really don't know where to start on her. So, 1-4 had Manfred von Karma. The perfect prosecutor, one hell of a final boss, intimidating as all crap. And then you beat him... so in 2-2 when you find out that his successor, a prodigy who'd been prosecuting overseas since she was thirteen years old is pissed off about it and coming to get you? Well, that was at first a "oh ****" moment for me. But I was also a little bit disappointed, because the whole "beat the big bad, but OH NOES HERE COMES HIS VENGEANCE-SEEKING SUCCESSOR WHO IS BETTER THAN HE IS!!!" trope is a bit overdone.
  • Franziska Von Karma was born and grew up in Germany, by her father Manfred Von Karma. When she was 2, her father took in Miles Edgeworth as an orphan, with whom she shared a Brotherly/Sisterly bond. However, Edgeworth tended to do his own thing, frequently leaving Franziska behind. During her years at elementary school, Franziska would always wind up going to her previous year's classroom.

  • Franziska take her father's insistence on “perfection” very seriously. She will do whatever is necessary to achieve her goal perfectly, and is not above using deception, blackmail, underhanded mind games, or sheer physical abuse. Ms. von Karma does not suffer fools gladly, and everyone is a fool. Franziska is domineering, controlling, and arrogant – not that she considers these bad traits – and she is not secretly a nice young woman. The assumption of such will lead to immediate pain. Her mind is sharp , calculating, and does not consider, or understand, the concepts of defeat or failure - perfection is always the only option. She is only slightly less abusive to her allies. Her speech is very formal , and Franziska has no qualms about voicing her opinions openly, loudly, and in public spaces. In the rare event that someone manages to get under her skin, she tends to fire off rapid, repetitive insults in an attempt to berate the hapless sod back into submission. It should be noted that Franziska does have a slightly less homicidal side to her, though it rarely manifests. While she does not “love” her Papa in the conventional sense, she has a deep respect and admiration of him. Her adoptive “little” brother Miles Edgeworth is the only person for whom she feels any kind of affection – this does not save him from her vicious temper or frequent scorn, but does make her oddly over-protective of him. While this is the exception to the rule, she can develop a grudging respect for the few her manage to truly stand up to her.

  • Franziska’s early childhood was, contextually, uneventful - born the second child of the von Karma family , she grew up in a strictly regimented household. From a young age, she was taught manners, reading, writing, history, science, and basics of a variety of other subjects alongside her older sister, whose career did not take a military term. Her father, Manfred, had little to do with her rearing, but this is not to say he was neglectful, merely that he represented a distant uncle instead of a stereotypically paternal father. Franziska holds a great amount of respect for her father, and strives to match his standards of ‘perfection’. When she was around five, Manfred unexpectedly adopted a boy of 10 into the family fold, casually explaining to Franziska that this boy - one Miles Edgeworth - was to be raised alongside her. Young Franziska took quite seriously to this charge and so assisted him as well she could while the two grew up - they regard each other as siblings, though Franziska is quite adamant about protecting her “little brother” from anything foolish. In a pique of early will-power , Franziska insisted adamantly upon attending the Belarus Academy at the same time as her brother. After her father pulled the necessary strings, she entered school accompanied by a rumor that she was only in attendance because of her family’s position. This notion was quickly dispelled after several older students found themselves at the business end of her whip. After her graduation, Franziska was awarded the rank of Lt. Commander and assigned to her father’s ship, the Victoria II, as a Quartermaster. It would be perhaps more accurate that she considers herself an excellent substitution for Captain in the absence of her father, or that Franziska’s interpretation of her duties is much more extensive than the textbook definition. She prefers to ignore the fact that her “little” brother is actually First Mate, but doesn’t often overstep the boundaries of position and acceptable conduct.

  • ===Miles Edgeworth=== First and foremost, of course, Miles is her "little brother". She's very protective of him, in her own sort of way - she'll always be the one to show him the stark truth even if he doesn't want to see it. It's all for the best, really. 'ziska knows very well that Miles is perfectly capable of taking care of himself, but that doesn't alter the fact that she could do it better >:

  • PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE: Not too much, outside of her immediate social circle. Franziska is still young enough that she doesn't have much of a reputation. On the Vicky though, she's simply known as a terror, the Captain's daughter, and an obsessive perfectionist. SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE: Again, not much. What little would be here is almost entirely related to her family in general. POP PHENOMENON?: Ha ha ha, no.
abstract
Only... then you find out through the next two cases that this isn't the case at all with Franziska. She isn't there in America to get vengeance for her father at all, for one thing. For another? She's not even as good as he is. Franziska is clever and crafty, sure, and a decent prosecutor--but her cheap tricks aren't as good as her father was, she gets rattled much more easily, and she's far from his equal. (Which is a good thing, honestly--it would have dulled the impact Manfred really did have). Franziska is living her life trying to live up to this impossible ideal set up by her father... and she's failing to do so. For that matter, she didn't even come to America to avenge her father as Phoenix (and the player) initially think. There are two reasons Franziska is in America. The first... is to prove herself. Phoenix Wright is the man who beat the other two "Von Karma" prosecutors, Edgeworth and her father. If she can beat Phoenix, she proves herself as their equal, if not their better. Secondly, she comes for Edgeworth--after hearing of how he lost his perfect record and then fled? She knows he isn't dead, and says as much to Phoenix--and we learn in 2-3 and later 2-4 how she came for him. He had fallen from the Von Karma way and disgraced the name, and she came there to set him back on track. Only... she fails in both of these goals. Phoenix tarnishes her record as he did Edgeworth and Manfred. And when she finally meets Edgeworth again in 2-4, not only does he not need her help at all, he's found his own path... and now she's the one who needs him. Franziska, who'd been raised her entire life as a prosecutor? Her entire existence had been to be a successor to her father and the Von Karma name, and she cannot understand how Edgeworth or Phoenix can accept a loss in court like that. So she's ready to give up once and for all, until Edgeworth shows up and tells her that she's better than that, and he knows she's better than that. If she's going to give up, than this is where they part ways once and for all. That's what finally breaks Franziska, but she vows that she will catch up to him some day. She'll take his lesson to heart--that the Von Karma way is not the only way, or even the best way. I mentioned how I love the Phoenix/Maya relationship? Well the Edgeworth/Franziska relationship is probably my single favorite in the series. They see each other as siblings, love each other dearly--but it's a tough sort of love, a "you're better than this" sort of love. When Edgeworth is suffering from his earthquake phobia in 3-5, Franziska takes the big sister role and basically tells him to go to his room until he can get a hold of himself. Their dynamic is utterly fantastic, and I really do adore it. Even though there is a lot of (somewhat twisted) affection there, though... Franziska sort of sees Edgeworth as a rival, something to be attained. We see this as they face off in court in 3-5 (one of the best parts of the whole series, IMO)... but more than rivals, they're siblings and partners. Yes, Franziska is a bit annoying in the first two cases you have against her. But that's sort of the point, showing how she's a failed successor. (And the "fool" gimmick... well, at the risk of sounding like a weeaboo? In the original Japanese, it was stringing "bakabakabaka" together, which is basically a really childish thing to do. So it was to show that she's still pretty immature, meant to demonstrate something about her character... which didn't carry over into the localization, unfortunately, and WAS gimmicky there) Like Godot, she is a flawed character with an obsession. But unlike Godot, with the help of Edgeworth, Phoenix, and in a way Adrian, Franziska actually manages to overcome her flaws and rise above them--though as she learns from Edgeworth, it's not just a single moment of enlightenment, it's walking a constant path. When she returns in 3-5, she HAS developed, and she IS more mature. Plus, investigating with her as your partner is one of the most amusing parts of 3-5. She's a flawed character, of course. But I like her because of the flaws and how she develops and changes to rise above them. And there's just something that I really like about her that I can't quite put my finger on... but it's why she's my fourth favorite character in the entire series.

During her years at elementary school, Franziska would always wind up going to her previous year's classroom. Feeling overwhelming pressure from her father's reputation as a "perfect" prosecutor, as well as her adoptive brother, Franziska started her legal studies in Germany at a very young age, and by the age of 13, she was set to pass the bar exam. She took a vacation to America with her father to watch Edgeworth prosecute his first case, but the trial was canceled when the defendant and a prosecutor were found dead in a defendant lobby. Manfred put the two of them in charge of the subsequent investegation. Franziska told Edgeworth that they would compete to find the killer first, and Edgeworth played along. Upon investigating the crime scene, Franziska and Edgeworth argued about the order of events, with Edgeworth arguing that the evidence didn't make sense with the assumption that the victims had killed each other. Franziska then followed Edgeworth as he questioned the various individuals tied with the trial until Edgeworth confronted Calitsto Yew as the killer and the Yatagarasu. However, Yew shot at them and escaped from the courthouse, with Detective Badd vowing to catch her. Franziska started her prosecuting career shortly after this incident. Compounded with her perfect record up to her arrival in America, she earned a reputation as "the Prodigy". Like her father and Edgeworth, she would go to great lengths to get a guilty verdict, resorting to her father's tactics in her efforts to match his popularity.
