He was the second person to work in the role on the programme after its initial designer, Denis Parkin, who had first created the world of the Weatherfield from the scripted descriptions and visits to the terraced streets of Salford. Caldwell had worked closely with Parkin before taking on the role and in December 1961 provided a detailed illustration of Coronation Street and its environs to TV Times for a special pull-out. He also designed nineteen episodes of the second season of the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression in 1966. Among his other work as a staff designer for Granada Television were sets for Skyport, Knight Errant Limited, The Man in Room 17, The Fellows, City '68 and The Dustbinmen. In the early 1970s he moved to Yorkshire Television where his work could be seen on Beryl's Lot, Wilde Alliance and the comedies Rising Damp, Hallelujah! and In Loving Memory.
