  • The Montreal Victorias were formed in 1881 and were the second hockey club to be formed (after McGill University). They played out of the Victoria Rink. From 1886 through 1908 the Victorias played in the various major leagues. They won the Stanley Cup in 1895, 1897, 1898, and 1899. After 1908 the team wanted to remain amateur and left the professional major leagues. It joined first the Interprovincial Hockey League for the two seasons that it played and then became part of the Interprovincial Hockey Union. The union was not a good draw in Montreal so the Victorias joined the very popular Montreal City Hockey League until it, too, folded in 1923. From then on the Victorias played in the main senior league in Quebec, whatever its name and makeup was. In 1924-25 the Victorias won the Quebec senior title but lost the Eastern Canada semi final. In 1926-27, the team was the first Canadian ice hockey team to tour Europe in a non-Olympic year (See 1926-27 Montreal Victorias). In 1927-28, the Victorias made it all the way to the Allan Cup final which they lost. The Victoria Rink was closed in 1937. The team ceased operation in 1939.
