  • Mastaba is a form of Jaffa martial arts, which apparently relies on acrobatic moves based on the lower body. It is somewhat similar to the Tau'ri martial art of Capoeira. It was used by the Jaffa who served Imhotep and knowledge of this fighting style was mandatory for all of Imhotep's Jaffa. It was later taught to the Jaffa rebels on Cal Mah, becoming a somewhat trademark form of combat among their ranks. In 2002, Imhotep, who took a human host and pretended to be his own Jaffa First Prime, K'tano , he used Mastaba skills to defeat Teal'c during Joma secu in a scene very reminiscent of Worf and Gowron in DS9. If it weren't for Teal'c using a broken Bashaak, Imhotep would have killed him. (SG1: "The Warrior")
(SG1: "The Warrior")
  • To understand Mastabas and the construction of Egyptian burial tombs it is important to consider the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. The greatest stimulus for the ancient Egyptians was their belief in an afterlife. This was reflected in their architecture and most prominently by the enormous amounts of time, money, and manpower involved in the building of their tombs. “Egyptians believed that the soul could live only if the body was preserved from corruption and depredation.” From the predynastic era forward, the ancient Egyptians strove to develop methods for preserving the bodies of the dead. Initially embalming methods were used, and later architectural tombs were devised to preserve the corpse indefinitely. The body would be placed in a deep, sealed chamber such as a Mastab

Initially embalming methods were used, and later architectural tombs were devised to preserve the corpse indefinitely. The body would be placed in a deep, sealed chamber such as a Mastaba. The remains were not in contact with the dry desert sand, consequently natural mummification of the remains could not take place. In order to preserve the remains, the ancient Egyptian priests had to devise a system of artificial mummification.
