  • The Corrections Service was the agency responsible for prison management in the New Republic, working with the Security Service, National Police, and Investigative Bureau. Corrections was created following the inability of the police and New Republic Army in keeping prisoners secure. It was known by many people to be a puppet of the Security Service, and was known to have refused orders from the New Republic Senate. The Corrections Service also had corruption problems, though they were said to have mostly been eliminated by 21 BBY, according to the New Republic Central Court. Despite the criticisms, the Service tended to do it's job of managing prisoners well, with prisoner escapes lowering by 61% since the agency's creation. It was directed by Colonel General Anatoly Zaguyov, a former officer of the New Republic Marines. It maintained some 400,000 personnel, mainly concentrated in the Core Worlds. The headquarters were on Coruscant, near the Security Service and Investigative Bureau headquarters. Some guards of the Service were known to have taken part in frontline combat during times of conflict. The Service had a smaller budget than many other agencies, though was enough to keep prisons running and the soldiers and officers trained. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Corrections Service was mainly used to keep Yuuzhan Vong prisoners as the Army needed all units on the frontlines. Many personnel were killed by Yuuzhan Vong warriors in various staged prison breaks and riots, and thus the budget and training of the Corrections Service was enlarged. After the formation of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances following the defeat of the invaders, it was replaced by the Galactic Alliance Penitentiary Bureau, which was much smaller and generally less effective. It was often helped by the Galactic Alliance Security.
