Arturo Alessandri Besa of the National Party emerged victorious against five opponents in the first round, the only President since the electoral terms of the 1990 Constitution were agreed upon to win an election on the first ballot, and earning both the highest percentage of votes (53.4%) and the highest total number of votes. The 1994 election marked the first peaceful and democratic transfer of power from one political party to another in Chile since the 1960's, as the Provisional Transition Government of 1989-90 consisted of no political party and had come to power through popular revolt. In the Congressional election, which took place the same day, the Chilean right achieved great gains to shore up President Alessandri Besa's mandate. It was the last election in which the Liberal Renewal ran a candidate independently of the other conservative parties, and was the last election prior to the formation of the UDP by the PSDP and PDS.
