  • [Source] The VCX-820 escort freighter was a military grade freighter originally designed for the Imperial Remnant as a small warship. Designed several years before the Yuuzhan Vong War, the VCX-820 was a heavy yet fast flying-guns platform, and sported eight mandible mounted autoblasters that were capable of quickly overwhelming shields in a torrent of blaster fire. Because it was designed to military specifications, it could easily guard convoys of otherwise defenseless bulk freighters and commerce craft, yet despite this, was reasonably priced on the open market.
  • Designed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, the VCX-820 Escort Freighter was named to admit that it was built to military specifications without directly labeling it as a warship. It was first produced shortly before the Xen'Chi invaded the galaxy, and found instant popularity in the Mid and Outer Rim Territories as a true escort.

abstract
  • Designed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, the VCX-820 Escort Freighter was named to admit that it was built to military specifications without directly labeling it as a warship. It was first produced shortly before the Xen'Chi invaded the galaxy, and found instant popularity in the Mid and Outer Rim Territories as a true escort. At 20.2 meters in length, the VCX-820 was a small ship, but its heavy weaponry and enhanced shielding gave it more than enough advantage in a firefight. Originally developed to patrol the border with the New Republic, the VCX-820 is armed with a pair of twin heavy laser cannons, eight autoblasters, and a proton torpedo launcher. It requires a pilot and co-pilot to operate, as well as eight gunners to handle the weapons. Because of the ship's small size, no passenger space is found aboard the VCX-820, and a minimal one metric ton of cargo space is provided, thereby giving it freighter status. Visually, the VCX-820 takes many cues from the old YT-1300, with two forward-facing mandibles jutting at the front. These mandibles connect to the thin center section, with the cockpit mounted between the mandibles and the engine section along the rear.

Because it was designed to military specifications, it could easily guard convoys of otherwise defenseless bulk freighters and commerce craft, yet despite this, was reasonably priced on the open market. Because of its affordability and versatility, at the outbreak of the Yuuzhan Vong many smugglers and private entities sought a ship that was fast and agile, yet heavily defended: the VCX-820 filled this role well, and as a result, many larger trade-firms invested in these vessels, making it quite common during the hard times of the New Republic.
