His brothers, Rudi and Gerhard Ball also played hockey at a high level. He spent most of his club career with Berliner Schlittschuhclub, but also spent part of the 1929-30 season with the London Lions, and played for EHC St. Moritz in 1933-34 and HC Diavoli Rossoneri Milano from 1934-1936. Ball moved to South Africa in 1936 and played for a South African combination team in the first international game played in Johannesburg that September against Oxford University. He was also a member of the Johannesburg Lions during the 1936-37 season. He was appointed manager for the Union Ice Rink in Johannesburg, after it opened in June 1937.
