  • Continuity represents characters, settings and a string of events that are all shared within a single specific timeline. Due to artistic license, and the vastness of the greater Planet of the Apes mythos, not all storylines take place within the same shared continuity. Details revealed from various resources often conflict with information supplied by other sources. As such, there are several continuities that relate to the Planet of the Apes, but are distinguished from one another for one reason or another. This database divides the separate continuities into the following family groups:

The term may be applied in the Grand Theft Auto series to compare the consistency in a number of fictional topics in each game. abstract
  • A function which is continuous is one in which, intuitively, small changes in the input result in small changes in the output. Otherwise, a function is said to be discontinuous. A continuous function with a continuous inverse function is called bicontinuous. Continuity is more rigorously defined as follows: is continuous at if and only if: 1. * exists, proving that a point exists in that function at 2. * exists, proving that both sides of the function are approaching a specific value (if it is not possible to take a 2-sided limit, it may be necessary to do 2 1-sided limits and prove they are equal to each other first) 3. * , proving the function is approaching the same value as the point is at All three parts of the continuity test must be proven true in order for the function to be continuous. Continuity may be considered important since if a function is not continuous, it is non-differentiable at that point as well. However, if the function is continuous, that does not necessarily mean it is differentiable there, although it may be. All polynomial functions are continuous. • A continuity is a fictional universe or timeline that is characterized by recurring characters and settings and an internal consistency with regards to characterization and depicted events. Typically, stories that are produced by a particular licensor (such as IDW) or in a particular form of media (such as comic books) are in continuity with each other, meaning that they are meant to all take place in the same "world". This is not always the case, however. For example, the IDW comic Transformers Evolutions consists of stories that are explicitly set in different universes than the other IDW comics. IDW's own Beast Wars comics are also separate from their "main" continuity. The various coloring books published by Marvel in the 1980s might all take place in the same universe as each other, but there are no direct ties between them, and they could easily each be "in their own little world." Still, even in cases such as these, there are important similarities. Even though Evolutions' first story, "Hearts of Steel," can't fit in the same story-world as Transformers: Infiltration, they are alternate worlds in a relatively minor sense; the same Transformers characters are present in both, they just interact with Humanity at different points in time. Marvel's coloring books disagree on many points with the Marvel comic books, but they agree on many points as well. Thus, although the coloring books and the comics are not in continuity with each other, their similarities allow both to be categorized as being members of a Generation One "continuity family".

It can be assumed Rockstar North, the series' primary developer, has little regards to continuity when the need arises. A degree of effort was made to maintain continuity in the 3D Universe, with many characters recurring between titles, the settings maintaining their designs, and Grand Theft Auto III's plot expanded. Minor continuity errors, however, were still persistent in this part of the series. Similarly, continuity in HD Universe remain, although it no longer link's to the previous games.

Many persona roleplayers have "personal" continuity, that is, a specific character background known only to them. Though individual dream owners are encouraged to maintain their own continuities, Furcadia itself has a canon continuity, known as the Dragonlands. The rules for play within this setting are known as Furre!. Most main maps, specifically those intended for roleplay such as The Wylde, are set within this continuity.
  • Most TV programs pride themselves on maintaining an accurate and chronological continuity of actions between episodes and seasons, stringing together tightly-woven plot arcs that can last for years and require watching the entire series from the start to understand all the elements at play in a single episode. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is known for having little to no continuity of any kind between episodes, much less seasons. As such, main characters (such as Carl and the Aqua Teens) are regularly killed or permanently mutilated without any lasting consequences, returning unharmed in the next episode (sometimes even in the same episode). Even minor characters which are killed for humorous value in one way or another regularly re-appear later with no questions or commentary. Characters which hate each other one episode may have no particular feelings at all by the next one. This is particularly true for Master Shake, several episodes of which have him antagonizing Frylock, Meatwad, or Carl until they move out, kill him, or swear they're never going to speak to him again, with all inevitably being forgotten and reset to normal. Major locations and objects (such as Carl's house and car and the Aqua Teen house) are also often completely destroyed without any damage carrying over into the next episode. What this boils down to is being able to watch any given episode and not have to know a single thing about what preceded it. Each exists as its own 11-minute movie, in essence. There are exceptions to this rule and a few minor plot arcs (such as the "Marcula episodes" when the Aqua Teens' landlord has them cocooned in the desert for several episodes and the stories revolve around other characters occupying their house). This is part of the surreal humor and general "who cares?" attitude the show is known for, and why so many fans love it. Viewers shouldn't be confused.

The original basis of the series was a goddess coming to live with a man, and eventually as time went on it was clear that Mr. Fujishima had other ideas that came to mind; even if his new ideas clashed with his old ideas, he simply ignored those discrepancies in continuity and forged ahead. The OVAs are the next continuity. As mentioned previously on other sections of this site, the OVAs rewrote the beginning of the story as if Mr. Fujishima knew exactly how his characters would end up currently. I would say these changes are due to the fact that the vision is now different; it is no longer simply about a goddess living with a man, but also a conflict between worlds and rules (as further shown in the movie). The TV series is the most recent. It seems to me that they attempted to redo the OVAs and take them to the next level; all of the character appear as they currently appear in manga canon, and have their current personalities. However, the concept is the same; it is the characters who have evolved.
