  • The Artifact is a weapon of unbelievable power. Not only is the Artifact a source of great power, it is also a gateway, a one way portal from Hell to our dimension. The ancient civilization on Mars wrote of three unstoppable beasts, horrific and powerful demons they called the Hunters, said to protect the Artifact. Similar to the Soul Cube, the Artifact uses souls to power itself. For unknown reasons, it only seems to accept the souls of recently deceased humans.
  • The Artifact is prequel mini-episode of the fan film series Doctor Who: The New Regenerations. Prequel to Legend of the Cybermen.
  • This piece of technology, simply known as the Artifact; originating from the future, was likely created by an alternate future Anomaly Research Centre. The device held a time map of every Anomaly past or future, but the information could only be accessed by a high-tech computer, also from the future.
  • The Artifact or The Portal, known to the scientific community as the Excession at Voi, is a Forerunner artifact in Kenya, Africa on planet Earth, designed to generate a slipspace portal to Installation 00. It was buried between the town of Voi and the city of Mombasa, and uncovered by the Covenant during the Battle of Earth in late 2552.
  • The Artifact is the 37 episode of Legend of Chima and the 11th episode in Season 3.
  • The Artifact is an odd orb which seems to have unknown power inside it.
  • The Artifact is a alien device left over from the roswell crash. It was used to record humanity and is blade shaped.
  • This relic remained on the planet undiscovered for an unknown number of years until around 500 years ago when a Yautja hunting crew arrived. One hunter discovered the empty Pilot installation whereupon the Artifact was activated. This created a safe area for the Yautja hunters to set up camp and allowed them to continue to hunt Xenomorph prey. However, a power surge shut down the machine and allowed the Xenomorphs to overrun the hunters camp until the stasis generators could be reactivated.
  • When the UAC returns to Mars at the beginning of Resurrection of Evil, a team of Marines - including the game's protagonist - enter the Artifact's chamber and accidentally awaken it. This enables the forces of Hell under the command of Malcolm Betruger, now the Maledict, to invade again. Betruger also sends the three Hell Hunters to kill the Marine and retrieve the Artifact for himself.
  • Sometimes, a character or gimmick seems to no longer fit with the mood or design of a story according to a writer, but is kept because there seems to be no way for the writer to get rid of them without causing some serious disruption (unrelated to Retcons). Sometimes it's due to being tied in closely to the mythos or that The Artifact has just been around so long that removing it seems like overstepping bounds. And if it's due to pure fan popularity, the producers probably aren't going to push it out in any case for no reason. Examples of The Artifact include:

This created a safe area for the Yautja hunters to set up camp and allowed them to continue to hunt Xenomorph prey. However, a power surge shut down the machine and allowed the Xenomorphs to overrun the hunters camp until the stasis generators could be reactivated. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation later established a base of operations on the planet, Dr. Eisenberg sent a group of Synthetics to acquire the relic at Zeta Site only for them to fail. On 21 September 2230, the Iron Bears had managed to find a buyer for the Pilot technology and General Rykov dispatched Major Dunya on a mission to retrieve the Artifact. She encountered the hive of Xenomorphs but managed to successfully reach the Artifact Chamber where the relics power kept the creatures at bay. The Major used a Worm device to interface with the Pilot-tech systems in order to shut them down allowing her to retrieve the Artifact which she took back to Forward Observation Pod 5.

Sometimes it's due to being tied in closely to the mythos or that The Artifact has just been around so long that removing it seems like overstepping bounds. And if it's due to pure fan popularity, the producers probably aren't going to push it out in any case for no reason. The general way to solve this problem is to avoid it, or rather, them. You can bet anyone considered The Artifact is going to be politely skipped over by the writer whenever they can, although this can get shaky if the audience is seasoned to expect them around. Very common in webcomics and print comics with a rotating circle of writers. Less common on television given the emphasis on demographics and Ratings, although Filler occasionally trots out old premises. Occasionally this is caught early enough, though in Long Runners this results in a odd Bleached Underpants situation within a series, usually from Author Appeal tastes. Compare Grandfather Clause. Contrast Canon Immigrant, Pinball Protagonist, Breakout Character and Creator's Pet. See also Artifact Title. See Network Decay when this happens to an entire channel. On occasion The Artifact (or something the writers think is only an artifact) will be done away with but then missed and brought back in a different form as a Replacement Artifact; if The Artifact is restructured to fit in with current sensibilities, it's Reimagining the Artifact. This Trope has nothing to do with magical items or similar ancient objects of power; for that, see Ancient Artifact or Artifact of Doom. Examples of The Artifact include:
  • When the UAC returns to Mars at the beginning of Resurrection of Evil, a team of Marines - including the game's protagonist - enter the Artifact's chamber and accidentally awaken it. This enables the forces of Hell under the command of Malcolm Betruger, now the Maledict, to invade again. Betruger also sends the three Hell Hunters to kill the Marine and retrieve the Artifact for himself. Much of the game's plot revolves around the Marine learning the truth about the Artifact and ultimately setting out to return it to Hell where it can be destroyed. At the end of the game, the Marine brings the Artifact to Hell and uses it to destroy the Maledict. The Artifact itself is destroyed in the process.
