| abstract | - The Royal Institute of Military Science was a senior service college under the Glorious Armada of the Golden Empire which awarded graduate degrees to senior officers of the Navy, Army, and Starfighter Corps. A limited number of civilians were also allowed places in the academy. In contrast to the commissioning academies of the Empire, which offered (and even stressed) a number of technical and scientific degrees, the RISM focused more on degrees in military policy, strategy and tactics, and administration and logistics. Attendance was not mandatory for promotion, although it was very common, and very few officers were appointed to their services' High Commands without having attended. A few civilians were admitted to each class, usually weapons and spaceship scientists seeking advanced engineering training specifically in weapons creation, as well as civilian employees of the Armada who came for advanced training in logistics. Instructors at the Institute consisted of both senior military officers and civilians with expertise in various subjects. When Iomis was attacked during the Ssi-ruuvi Incursion, the instructors and students at the RISM led the planet's defense until reinforcements arrived.
