  • William Averell Harriman (15 November 1891 - 26 July 1986) was a Human diplomat and political leader who lived in the United States of America in the 20th century. In November of the year 1942, while serving as Franklin Delano Roosevelt's personal representative in Moscow, Harriman needed to return to London. Under the code name "Uncle Vanya", he flew aboard a Consolidated B-24 transport plane piloted by Lieutenant John Kirk and escorted part of the way by a Red Guard squadron that included the time-lost Pavel Chekov. While fighting German planes to enable Harriman and Kirk's escape, Chekov lost a wing and bailed out into the Baltic Sea. (TOS novel: Home is the Hunter)
