  • WHY HEROES WHY? Amusingly, the AK-74 is referred to by the game's files as the AEK-971 (in reality, the AK-74M), a similar yet different weapon. Contrary to what many "n00b"-ish players think, the change of skin and sound effect, while different from the normal Tommy's Super Typewriter/Rudolf's Uber Rescue, only serves to make the gun look and sound different. In reality, as mentioned before, the Assault Rifles are identical to the (short-range) Second Tier SMGs.
  • The rifle first saw service with Soviet forces in Afghanistan, and has been widely copied and exported. It has seen service with the following countries: Afghanistan; Angola; Armenia; Azerbaijan; Belarus; Bulgaria; PRC; Cuba; East Germany; Estonia; Georgia; Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Latvia; Lithuania; Moldova; Mongolia; North Korea; Romania; Russia; Soviet Union (former user); Syria; Tajikistan; Turkmenistan; Ukraine; Uzbekistan; Vietnam

  • The AK-74 is a 5.45mm assault rifle developed in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union, first appeared in Red Square in May 1977, It was developed from the earlier AKM (itself a refined version of the AK-47) and introduced in 1974. The weapon in Hitman: Contracts uses 5.56mm ammo, that with its black plastic furniture would rather make it an AK-101, rather than "true" AK-74M.
  • The AK-74 is a 5.45 mm assault rifle adapted in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov from the earlier AKM. The weapon’s name is an abbreviation for (Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1974, Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1974 года; “Kalashnikov automatic rifle model 1974”). Currently the weapon is in use by the majority of countries of the former USSR. Additionally, unlicensed versions were produced in Bulgaria (AK-74 and AKS-74U), China (Type 88), the former East Germany (MPi-AK-74N, MPi-AKS-74N, MPi-AKS-74NK), Poland (wz. 1988 Tantal, wz. 1989 Onyks) and Romania (AKS-74).
  • The AK-74 is a Russian assault rifle developed in the early 1970's to succeed the AK-47. In Incident: 011A, a grunt used one to shoot at Mag Agent: Torture, only to be punched into the wall. Unlike its predecessor rifle, the AK-74 uses the intermediate 5.45mm round as opposed to the 7.62mm utilized by the AK and the far more widely-spread AKM. Russia decided to stay with what works. The AK-74 and its variants are still in use in 2020, despite being a late 1940s design. A number of improvements have been made upon its 5.45mm ammunition, but the rifle itself is essentially unchanged. The only difference is that now an array of attachments is easily installed on the weapon and the muzzle brake has been improved. The AK-74, despite its age, has not lost its effectiveness, especially in the right hands.

After the death of Frank Marquard led Lopatin to attempt to defect to the Americans, Fralk assumed control of the weapon personally. He used it to devastating effect against Hogram's soldiers, but the weapon was neutralized when Sarah Levitt destroyed it (as well as both Fralk and Lopatin) with a Molotov cocktail slung under the bottom of the Damselfly.
