Despite being labeled as a Shinigami, and even he himself referring to himself as one, a number of situations have challenged this label. The first and most prominent is him possessing an inner Hollow, leading him to be labeled as a Visored by several (though recent events have lead to him losing this label). In addition, he has wielded a Bakkōtō, and temporarily forsook his Zanpakutō to do so, causing others to debate his label as a Shinigami as well. However, at the end of the day Akuto will refer to himself as a Shinigami, and those around him do as well.
