The Regiment was founded in 25 ABY, with a strength of eight infantry battalions and two armored battalions. It was transported by a specially tasked Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, known as the Fist of Bastion. When the Yuuzhan Vong War broke out several months after the unit's founding and the Moffs refused to enter it to aid the New Republic, Pellaeon dispatched the 347th secretly to the New Republic, offering it to the command of the New Republic Army. The 347th was accepted, and fought on the front lines against the extragalactic invaders. Considered to be an elite unit by the Imperial and Republic leaderships, this was mainly because of the great devotion and fierce loyalty of the Regiment's soldiers: everyone who joined had to take an oath in which they said that they are "already dead", and a lavish fake funeral ceremony was put on for each member. The fact that this unit officially did not exist made it easier to think that way. Because of that, the 347th's soldiers fought with ferocity and resistance that surprised their comrades from other units. During the Vong invasion, as more volunteers joined the unit, the 347th expanded to a strength of ten infantry battalions, two armored battalions, and one mechanized battalion. This combined for a total strength of about 10,000 men. During the war, the Yuuzhan Vong's military intelligence noted the unit's existence as the Vong faced them in many battles, and noted it as "one of the most formidable formations fighting for the enemy". By the time the invasion ended, the 347th would gain an infamous reputation as one of the most hardened units in the New Republic and Imperial armies, and in 31 ABY was made an "official" unit of the Imperial Army (though by that point most knew it existed anyway). The 347th's members were made Imperial Army Special Missions troopers and took part in many other operations in the post-Vong war period.
