abstract
  • Oskar Bruenig was one of René Benoit's former henchmen. Born in Germany, he was eventually wanted in three countries due to smuggling drugs and weapons. He also eventually worked with the infamous French arms dealer René Benoit. At some point, he was hit in the spine by one of Benoit's weapons' bullets, with it being left in due to the risk of crippling him or worse if it was removed. Eventually, he entered the United States with two other former members of Benoit's group to steal military-grade weapons and sell them on the black market. However, they were caught by two Naval Officers during a routine patrol through Washington D.C. while trying to steal weapons (specifically over two dozen M16s with full ammunition) from the Naval Operations Center in Reston, and with their cover story of trying to fix a fence falling through, they were forced to enter a firefight, killing Lamar Fin. Oskar Bruening then was wounded by Janet Shor in the ensuing firefight, although not before wounding her as well. He was then put through surgery by Dr. Cyril Taft (who had been notified of the man's wounded status around the same time Gibbs got a call relating to the shootout), although he ultimately died on the operating table before Leroy Jethro Gibbs got a chance to interrogate him about who his friends were and their plans, although Taft hearing him speak German during the surgery before his death nonetheless resulted in him and the NCIS Major Case Response Team learning his identity the next day. During a further autopsy between Taft and Ducky (due to an out of place scar that Taft noticed during surgery), they also discovered a crude plate in his arm that originally belonged to an MIA missionary for a missing femur. They also discovered from a further autopsy the lodged bullet (with Taft being relieved that it was simply his time to go since he initially believed he screwed up in the surgery), which led to NCIS, specifically DiNozzo and Gibbs initially, to learn that the man had formerly been tied to Benoit (to the former's consternation, as he had earlier told Benoit's daughter, Jeanne Woods, that their current case had nothing to do with Benoit).
