The league's purpose was to develop 16-20 year olds hockey skills to prepare athletes for career advancement in a collegiate and/or professional opportunity, while providing them secondary school educational opportunities. The league was to be greatly different if it returned for the 2015-16 season as of December, 2014 ten of the league's fourteen teams announced an agreement to become aligned with the east coast based United States Premier Hockey League as the "USPHL-Midwest". The only remanining teams as of December 19 2014 are the Rochester Ice Hawks, Maple Grove Energy, Steele County Blades, and the Forest Lake Lakers. The league would also be losing the Crystal Lake Rampage and the Fort Wayne Federals both of which are sitting out the 2014-15 season and have announced they will also be joining the USPHL-Midwest. The Forest Lake Lakers were announced as joining the new league on February 27, 2015. The balance of the teams with the exception of the Rochester Ice Hawks and the inactive Twin Cities Northern Lights had joined the USPHL-Midwest by April 29,2015 and the league announced that it was disbanding. The Rochester Ice Hawks had been rumored to be trying to join the North American Hockey League for the 2016-17 season; prior to the league collapsing. On May 21, 2015, the Ice Hawks were accepted as an expansion team in the North American 3 Hockey League for the 2015-16 season.
