| abstract | - St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving will have a familiar face as its new head coach, as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Steve Watson announced in March 2009 that St. Bonaventure graduate Seth Johnson will be named the head coach effective immediately. “We are excited to have Seth joining our athletics department,” said Watson. “His collegiate success here at St. Bonaventure combined with the enthusiasm and passion he has for the sport are tremendous attributes that will only benefit our already successful women’s swimming and diving program.” Outgoing head coach Lance Brennan did resign to focus on his new position as Director of Compliance for the athletic department at St. Bonaventure. Brennan guided the Bonnies to six second place finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships over his 10 years and was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in 2001. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the women’s swimming and diving team and I’m very thankful that I have the opportunity to continue to work and grow professionally at St. Bonaventure,” said Brennan, who coached 10 individual A-10 champions and 24 All-Conference swimmers. “I’m anxious to begin my new role as Director of Compliance and begin working with all of our student-athletes. I’m also excited to watch the team continue to improve under Seth. He’s a coach that is determined and is very passionate about this program.” Johnson comes to the Brown and White after working at Olean High School for the past four years. While at Olean, Johnson served as the Aquatics Director and an assistant coach for the boys and girls swimming teams. “I am very excited to return to St. Bonaventure and have the opportunity to give back to the school that gave me so much during my four years as a student-athlete,” said Johnson. “Coach Brennan has done an excellent job of recruiting and coaching our current coaches and student-athletes and I believe we have the foundation in place that will lead to future success both in the pool and in the classroom.” Under his watch, Johnson helped guide the girls team to a 54-6 record over his four years and the boys team to a 24-6 record during his two seasons with the squad. Johnson led the girls to three county championships and two undefeated seasons. With the help of Johnson, five of his girls advanced to the individual state meet qualifiers, with four of them qualifying for the state finals. In his two years working with the boys squad, he helped two of them advance to the individual state meet qualifiers. During his time at St. Bonaventure, Johnson was one the top swimmers in program history. He still holds the program record in the 50-yard freestyle (20.45), which he set back in 2001-02 during his freshman season. Johnson was a two-time All-Conference swimmer, including his freshman season when he was named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie. In his four Atlantic 10 Swimming Championships, Johnson captured 14 gold medals, including two in the 50-free. St. Bonaventure finished sixth at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships held at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, N.Y. In Brennan’s final meet as head coach, the Bonnies broke the school record for the 100-fly five times, the 200 back three times, the 100 back twice and the 200 medley relay. For the season, 17 top five times were established in six events by seven different student-athletes.
