The islands are among the few places have not had a pre-Columbian native population. Due in great part to its unique ecology, the islands are under government protection and is among several world heritage sites. Among the most noted explorers of the native ecology was Britannic naturalist Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution was largely attributed to his time on the islands.
