The third son of Sir William Bowman, Bt, surgeon, and his wife Harriet nee Paget. he was educated at Eton College and Brasenose College, before being ordained as a deacon in 1877. He was appointed curate of Holy Trinity, Hoxton in 1877. In 1879 he was ordained as a priest, and became curate at St Margaret's, Westminster. In 1884 he was appointed vicar of the neighbouring parish of St Andrew's, Ashley Place, Westminster and in 1889 of St Mark's, Kennington.

In 1884 he was appointed vicar of the neighbouring parish of St Andrew's, Ashley Place, Westminster and in 1889 of St Mark's, Kennington. From 1888-91 he was a member of the London School Board representing the Westminster Division. In 1897 he retired from active parochial work due to failing health. In 1901 he became reader at the Chapel Royal, Savoy and in 1902 assistant chaplain. He died suddenly while visiting Southwold, Suffolk in 1904, aged 50.
