We can see from the clue book's introduction that Pellis is an old man and a friend of Lord Garrick. Garrick's diary tells that Pellis tortured one of Mangar's minions in order to get information about the secret passageway that leads from the lowest sewer level up to Mangar's Tower in Skara Brae.
