- Piranhas are enemies that are found in Spooky Swamp in Spyro: Year of the Dragon, infesting the waters of the swamp. It is mentioned by the fireflies that the piranhas have claimed many victims, and they can't be killed. Piranhas are later found in Dragonfly Falls and some water areas of the Coastal Remains section in Spyro: A Hero's Tail. They attack in groups through biting when Spyro is in or under the water in their vicinity. Although it is difficult, it is possible to defeat piranhas by charging from a specific angle.

The idea of piranhas as vicious man-eating monsters come from local myths that the fish can strip full-grown humans and cattle of meat in seconds and are exclusive carnivores (in reality they are omnivores) - however despite these myths being proven false there are accounts of piranhas occassionally seeking humans as prey, though much like sharks this is rarer than fiction depicts. Piranhas appear as the main antagonists of at least four horror films of the same name which includes a prehistoric piranha and a mutated piranha also acts as a supervillain in Marvel comics.

The group recorded a final BBC session for Mike Read in September 1980 before splitting the following year. A reconstituted Piranhas, minus Helder but including Gary Turner, formerly of the Dodgems, went on to have a top 20 hit in November 1982 with a cover of Lou Busch's "Zambezi" before splitting again. In 2010 Bob Grover and John Helmer reunited in a line-up calling themselves Piranhas 3D. This composition of the group gigged regularly, mostly on the south coast, until a split in February 2014.
