  • Banting University is a fictional University in Kingston, Ontario, most likely representing Queen's University. Banting is one of the most prestigious universities in Canada. Their business program is highly selective, with an annual admission of about 30 students per year. They have a zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism, and are known to have either pupils that are from wealthy backgrounds, or ones who are very smart. In December 2006, there was a dorm fire set by former student Paige Michalchuk. It's often considered the "Harvard of the North", a term often associated with Queen's. Besides its top tier business program, Banting is also known for its nationally ranked molecular and cellular biology program. The school has been at the forefront of many important medical fields including cancer and stem cell research. In 2008, Banting was the top ranked biology program based on the number of journal citations (110/faculty). A majority of these papers cited were in high impact journals such as Science, Nature and Cell. Currently, the biology faculty of Banting includes 16 Nobel Laureates and 25 Howard Hughes Investigators, which is why it is commonly referred to as the "UCSF of the North". The most notable aspect of this program is its enormous Drosophila research community including over 40 distinguished faculty. Banting is also known for its unique approach to encouraging collaboration by having the most joint lab ventures of any other basic science program in both Canada and the UK, which is why it is often referred to as the "Oxford of the West". In Season 6, it lost a member of its student body, Paige Michalchuk. Both Damian Hayes and Liberty Van Zandt were accepted into Banting, although Liberty went to Smithdale University with Manny and Emma instead, and the show did not follow Damian after high school. A framed diploma from Banting can be seen on Archie Simpson's office wall in Season 11.
