  • The Ark was a massive starship created by the Hutt Cartel. Commissioned by Toborro the Hutt as a way to escape the volatile atmosphere of the planet Makeb while carrying a huge supply of the recently discovered power source called, Isotope-5. Built in secret inside the Giant's Spear mesa, it reached near completion during the early days of the destabilization of Makeb's core. During said crisis, the Galactic Republic intervened, captured, and completed construction of the starship. The Ark was re-purposed to evacuate the majority of the planet's population in response to the growing worries over the state of the planet. The Ark finally took off, powered by the same energy source it was supposed to hold during the final moments of the hypothesized destruction of the planet.

They also decided to use their vast intellect and precious time turning it into a big Halo maker, yet did not take the time to even build a Starbucks. This therefore qualifies the Forerunner as the dumbest smart people who ever lived. However some useful features include a giant portal to Earth just in case they needed to pop out for milk (even if the Flood have killed all the cows), a massive shield system to protect you from those pesky door-to-door-to-massive-space-construct salesman, and plenty space to park your UNSC Frigate. In the event of a massive Covenant Loyalist invasion it is programmed to.......do absolutely nothing. While the construct can automatically build a giant ring of galactic death it is completely unable to do didely-squat about a few covenant cruisers. Talk about a waste of Forerunner tax payer money. Of course in the event of Flood contamination the Ark swings into full containment and purge mode, deploying up to 5 floating targets also known as Sentinels. This can distract up to 2 Combat forms for a full second as the Sentinels fire their pitiful excuses for weapons also known as "Tickelers", if you have some frozen TV dinners on you, these babies can defrost them in under 20 minutes, while burning the outside and leaving the inside perfectly raw. Just the way most mature Jackals like it. All of these factors combine to make the Ark one of the galaxy's least popular tourist destinations. It is marginally less popular than Jericho IV, a world glassed by the Covenant after the little girls (who claim to be Marines) guarding the planet were routed. They did however manage to give one Grunt a scraped knee. He made a full recovery. While the Ark may be unpopular it is still a great place for a SPARTAN family picnic, and the site of the grave of one Master Sergeant Junior Avery Johnson. Also found here are the remains of about a billion covenant Loyalists, which when walked on, make a satisfying "CRUNCH!". UPDATE: The Ark was recently destroyed by a SPARTAN identified only by the rank of Master Chief. Covenant Loyalist witnesses have described him as "ge'ds verum tome" which when translated from the Covenant's official language ("Idiot") means "That tall, green bastard". Alarmingly reports indicate that when they killed him to prevent the Ark's destruction he would simply revert to where he was standing ten seconds ago and proceed to kill them all anyway. Loyalist's received no such advantage. Loyalist forces have complained to the Ark's authority for such matters, the SUPANOVA (Section for Unbiased Practices Against Non-humans On or Very-close-to the Ark). Sadly, no one has worked here for 10,000 years. Go figure. The only intelligent (and we use the word lightly) creature left as a spokesman for the Ark, a AI calling itself The Lightbulb, is claimed to have told the Master Chief that while the Ark had its problems, he was genius. He continued to insist this and call the Chief a "Reclaimer" until the Chief grew sick of this and shot him with a Spartan Laser. This also may have had something to do with Sgt. Johnson's death and the fate of the galaxy, but mainly the little hovering lightbulb just got annoying, and almost inconsolable after being called Tinkerbell by Sgt. Johnson. The destruction of the Ark forced several mob bosses to find new places to dump bodies and resulted in a temporary shortage of intergalactic weapons of death. This was however balanced out by an abundance of floating free scrap metal and the downfall of Humanity's greatest enemy. But mainly people cared about the Chief and forgot about the thousands of Marines who died there. However, some made it back to Earth to tell the tale and remind people of the dangers of giant space fortresses of death. Like you could forget.
  • Derived from a Latin word for "chest" (see also the Ark of the Covenant), an ark is now best known as a vessel (usually a boat, or at least boat-shaped) in which people seek sanctuary from some great cataclysm. This doesn't necessarily mean the people go by themselves. If they're smart, they'll bring flora and fauna with them. And if they're pressed for time or resources, they may not go bodily: The ark may simply contain the distilled knowledge and culture of the civilization, and maybe some of their DNA, in the hope that they will be reconstructed or at least remembered by someone else. In this case, the Voyager spacecraft, which possess detailed descriptions of Earth and its people, could be considered arks -- except that we didn't build them under the imminent threat of our own destruction. The concept of the ark owes most of its form to the biblical story of Noah's Ark. Most iterations of the ark today either directly identify with or at least reference the Noah story, including such elements as: The Great Flood; the ark builder being divinely inspired to prepare for the flood, and mocked by his neighbors who don't know the cataclysm is coming; the ark housing pairs of animals, implied to be all the animal species in the world, who enter and reside therein compliantly without eating each other; and, the ark builder sending a dove or other bird to search for dry land to signify that the Flood is ended. The original Ark still crops up from time to time, usually as a Public Domain Artifact for the characters to hunt down. But new arks are just as common, and these days seem to be as likely spaceships as oceangoing vessels, with the cataclysm necessitating their construction being a supernova or similarly world-destroying event. Any structure which bears the last remnants of an alien race is likely an ark. Compare Generation Ships and Fling a Light Into the Future. Examples of The Ark include:
  • The Ark is a massive starship built by the Hutt Cartel. The vessel was commissioned by Toborro the Hutt to escape Makeb's volatile atmosphere while carrying a colossal payload of the recently discovered power source, Isotope-5.
  • The Ark is a pivotal location in the series, introduced in season 2.

During the Oil Rig level, Georgian computer technician Piotr Lejava is captured by Sam Fisher and is interrogated on what he knew about Nikoladze's intent. Piotr mentioned the Ark to Fisher, but did not actually know what it was, only that it was "what Nikoladze wanted most". During the Kalinatek level, in which Grinko's mercenaries are destroying evidence of their operations, it's apparent that they are also destroying information about the Ark. During the Presidential Palace level, Sam Fisher is tasked with recovering an interrogation recording entitled "The Ark Interrogation Files". The interrogation recording lasts up to 8 hours, with the interrogation victim being one of Nikoladze's colonels. When the files were recovered, the Ark was revealed to be a SADM (Special Atomic Demolition Munition) bomb for use on America. In short, the Ark was a nuclear suitcase bomb. Fisher was charged with recovering the device before Nikoladze and his minions did, as they had also infiltrated the Palace in hopes of acquiring it for their own usage.
