Emerging from the crystals, these shard souls had the ability to possess living creatures, turning them into bloodthirsty savages, bent on slaying the descendants of Zaramoth's ancient enemies, the Azunites. This phenomena came to be known as the plague, as many assumed it to be some manner of disease, for the spirits were invisible to all but those with Azunite blood in their veins. Eventually, the source of the shard souls, deep within the Mines of Kaderak, was devastated by Vix, and the other companions of the Hero of the Second Age. If any remain, then they are once again buried below the earth.
