Within each yakshaka was a native of Jacuruku selected in regular culls of the countryside. The yakshaka were often described as statue-like as alchemies and magic turned them into stone while removing their individual free will. They were capable of remaining unmoving, quietly in place, for as long as required. Their first priority was to guard the Thaumaturg mages and they were often used as bodyguards. In battle yakshaka fought unflinchingly without sound, even when injured. When cut, they bled "black blood as thick as tar."
