Following a brief acting career, he studied film at UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles) and began working in special effects. As an employee at the fledgling ILM, Greenwood worked in the miniature and optical effects unit on the first Star Wars film and worked on the television series Battlestar Galactica. He also did projects independent of ILM, including effects work for Steven Spielberg's acclaimed 1977 science fiction hit Close Encounters of the Third Kind. After leaving ILM in 1979, he continued working independently as a special effects technician on films such as Star Trek and Alien and television shows such as The A-Team (starring Dwight Schultz), Max Headroom (starring Matt Frewer), and Knight Rider. Greenwood died of a heart attack in Topanga, California, in 2004. He is survived by his son, Kevin.
