  • There are many file formats for various uses.
  • A file format or file type is the language (or "encoding") used to express data in a file. Operating systems need to know the particular format(s) of a given file in order to read it, and must therefore record metadata about the file. This is often accomplished by designating the part of a filename following the last dot as the file extension. In Windows almost all files have extensions as they are the only metadata which Windows recognizes for the purpose, while other platforms such as Linux do not require them although they may still be used in an auxiliary role.
  • The line terminator expected for each file format is: CR is carriage return (return cursor to left margin), which is Ctrl-M or ^M or hex 0D. LF is linefeed (move cursor down), which is Ctrl-J or ^J or hex 0A. Sometimes, LF is written as NL (newline).
  • There are a number of file formats associated with The Witcher: * 2DA format * BIF format * BIK format * BFX format * DDS format * DLG format * DLLs and EXEs * GFF V3.3 format * KEY BIF V1.1 format * LUA format * LUC format * NSS format * NCS format * PNG format * QDB format * QST format * TheWitcherSave format An article dealing with the locations of these files can be found on the Game layout page.

With the .GFF file format you can then read and modify most of those data files, repackaging them when you are done. The creature, conversation, door, encounter, item, merchant (store), place-able, trigger, sound and waypoint documents provide additional details about those specific object types and how to interact with the corresponding .2DA files. An article dealing with the locations of these files can be found on the Game layout page.
