As a child he heavily trained in hand to hand combat as well as the use of multiple firing arm's by his father. Blackhawk is killed by unknown circumstances leaving Kevin alone at the age of 20. Kevin decided to search for Lady Blackhawk hoping she could point him in the right direction to finding his father's killer. Lady Blackhawk refused to help Kevin seek out revenge then told him that her and the Birds Of Prey would handle it. When Kevin arrived he immediately began his search for the killer's whereabouts. He quickly found the man's address and broke into his home ready to get revenge. Kevin is then encounter by a Star Sapphire . The galactic guardian of love pleaded him to stop, saying killing his father's murderer wouldn't make him feel better or help anyone, and that he would only regret it in the end. For a short moment the Star Sapphire's words got through to him but in the end he decided his Father deserved to be avenged. Before he pulled the trigger Star Sapphire used his ring to project his father's last message of love he left in our world when he died. After hearing his father's words Kevin turned away from the man without saying a word and exited the apartment. Star Sapphire caught up to him and began following him. When Kevin questioned why he was following him the Star Sapphire stated “My rings telling me you need my help to love.” Kevin explained his appreciation for showing him his dad's dieing message, but he didn't want to be bothered with the Star Sapphire anymore.
On his way out out of the city Kevin is attacked and infected by a vampire. Acting on his new natural instincts he began uncontrollably feeding on people. Not able to control himself, he would suck his victims dry and still not satisfy his hunger. This once again drew the attention of Star Sapphire. Unintentionally Kevin attacked him. Once Star Sapphire began to recognize him, he used his ring to purify him of the evil. Kevin passed out during the process and when he came too he saw the Star Sapphire laying lifeless on the floor. Immediately Kevin picked the boy up and took him to the closest hotel he could find. Not to long after Kevin got them settled Star Sapphire began to awaken. He explained how using his ring to relay his father's message and purify him of the Vampire's venom completely depleted his energy. Star Sapphire stayed with Kevin while his ring re-charged and the two got to know each other very well. Kevin was beginning to care for Star Sapphire. After his ring was charged Kevin decided to stay with Star Sapphire in Solar City, not having anything to return to in Metropolis.
