  • The 1976 Purolator 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Pocono Raceway on August 1, 1976. It was the 18th race on the 1976 season and third year NASCAR raced at Pocono. NASCAR before the race had made a rule change; they had limited teams to small carburators starting in mid-March but for Pocono they allowed teams to go back to larger carburators. David Pearson was the heavy favorite in the race, having won seven races entering August; he qualified second alongside Cale Yarborough.

NASCAR before the race had made a rule change; they had limited teams to small carburators starting in mid-March but for Pocono they allowed teams to go back to larger carburators. David Pearson was the heavy favorite in the race, having won seven races entering August; he qualified second alongside Cale Yarborough. The race became the most competitive of the season to date as the lead changed 47 times - 44 times in the first 124 laps - among eight drivers. Bobby Allison fought for the lead (though never officially leading a lap) before a mistake in the pits took place on Lap 44; he took off with unsecured left-side tires and they fell off in the track's Tunnel Turn. Allison finished 24th. Yarborough's engine seized near Lap 100 and Junior Johnson Motorsports changed engines in the garage area in 33 minutes; Cale returned to the race and finished 25th after leading 14 laps. Richard Petty stormed to the win when Pearson's tire went flat coming to the white flag and took only his second win of the season. He beat Buddy Baker by 24 seconds while Benny Parsons finished third, and now took the points lead by seven markers on Yarborough. Stats
