  • The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) was launched by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1997. It is an effort to improve the accessibility of the World Wide Web (WWW) for people with disabilities. Legislation was enacted in 1998 that mandates improved access both for federal employees and the public. In addition, rules developed by the Electronic and Information Technology Access Advisory Committee have been implemented by agencies to ease access issues.
