His second medal was awarded for his action while first officer of the Brodrick Castle, an emigrant ship that was severely damaged in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1876. He saved the ship but lost his leg.

His second medal was awarded for his action while first officer of the Brodrick Castle, an emigrant ship that was severely damaged in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1876. He saved the ship but lost his leg. Following his injury he left the sea and set up a business in the Port of London, setting in Leytonstone in the Essex suburbs of London. Elected to Leyton Urban District Council in 1909, he was made an alderman when the town was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1926. He was chosen as second mayor of Leyton in November 1927. He was one of the oldest mayors in the country and died in office aged 76 at his Leytonstone home. Some details here [1].
